R1MC reduces firecracker injuries during 2018 holidays to almost half
DAGUPAN CITY – Region 1 Medical Center (R1MC) saw firecracker-related (FWRI) injuries drop to almost half during the holidays.
The hospital’s leg of the “Oplan Iwas Paputok, Fireworks ang Patok” campaign by the Department of Health (DOH) recorded a 45.76-percent decline during the surveillance period of December 21, 2018 to January 5, 2019 with a total of 32 incidents versus 59 of the same reporting period last year in 2017.
As monitored by the Hospital Epidemiology Center, this year’s reported cases was still much lower still than the 36 reported injuries two years ago—in 2016.
Most of the patients were male with 28 (78.50 percent) whereas 4 (12.50 percent) were females. Children ages 5-9 and 10-14 were the most prone to injuries with 12 and 6 reported cases respectively.
Leading causes of firecracker injuries were kwitis, lusis, whistlebomb and fountain, though majority of the involvement of the cases were passive (59.37 percent) than active (40.63 percent).
A third of the incidents attended by the hospital were burns (31.25 percent), abrasions (25 percent), eye injury (21.88 percent), lacerated wounds and avulsions (9.37 percent each), and soft tissue swelling (3.12 percent).
R1MC also recorded zero casualty and stray bullet incidence during the observed period.
